Glenwood
High school rugby team coach, Rudi Dames has described the inclusion of the
school’s old boy, Kwenzokuhle Blose to represent South Africa at the under-20 world
championships in England as “no surprise”.
The
19-year old Toyota Free State Cheetahs prop inclusion in the 28-men squad comes
after a string of impressive performances in the Cheetahs reserves.
According
to Dames, the selection of Blose in the squad justified his hard-work.
“Kwenzo
is a hard working rugby player that gave 110% on and off the field. He was
respected by his peers and had a very good sense of humour. He knew his
strengths as a rugby player and he made sure he worked on his weaknesses,”
Dames said.
He
said they were surprised he adapted quickly to the position of a prop despite
playing most of his school rugby career as a lock.
“We
were surprised to see him being selected as a prop after moving to the position
this year. It usual takes time to settle, but overall we are happy for him and
we are looking forward to a great rugby career for him,” Dames said.
According
to Blose, the inclusion to the squad came at a right time when he had been able
to settle in the Cheetahs reserves as a prop.
“To be
included in the squad was a blessing for me. It all happened at the right time
when I had been to able impress in the reserves of the under-20 for the
Cheetahs,” Blose said.
Blose
was included in Dawie Theron’s starting 15 to face a combined under Golden Lions
under-19 and under-21 team for the warm-up match on Friday at Wits University.
Theron’s
men will be on a quest of returning with the gold medal for the second time
since the tournament’s establishment in 2008. The junior Boks last won the
tournament in 2012 when they were the hosts.
