Van Niekerk and Simbine receive heroes welcome

Olympic 400m champion Wayde van Niekerk and 100m finalist Akani Simbine arrived home to a heroes welcome at OR Tambo International Airport yesterday.

Van Niekerk and Simbine had spent some time in Europe after the Rio Olympic Games and were welcomed by hundreds of supporters, a reception that seemed to catch them by surprise.

According to Van Niekerk, the winning the 400m medal in a world record would have been impossible without support from South Africans.

“The support I received prior to the Olympics was the reason for my success at the Olympics, the medal I won is something special to me and I will cherish it and use it as my motivation to keep moving forward,” Van Niekerk said.

On his return to South Africa, Van Niekerk was surprised with Audi R8 worth R1.8million at OR Tambo International Airport. This was the 3rd car to be won by Van Niekerk in a period of a year after he won two cars at the South African Sports Awards in 2015.

Van Niekerk and Simbine - who finished fifth in the short sprint final in Rio, said they will take a break now in the off-season and start planning for the 2017 campaign, which includes the IAAF World Championships in London.

Simbine, who is an Information Science student at the University of Pretoria said his mind is now focused on achieving impressive results at school.

“I would give myself enough time to recover from the fatigue of preparations for Olympics and once I have chilled a bit all my focus would be on my studies,” Simbine said.

Athletics South Africa (ASA) President, Aleck Skhosana said South Africans should be proud of the performances of two of the country’s fastest men.

“I was privileged to witness first-hand the excellent performances of both Wayde van Niekerk and Akani Simbine at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. It is with great pride and joy that we receive these athletes back in South Africa. They have been great ambassadors for our country,” Skhosana said.

Thomas Tuchel, a German mentor eager to change Chelsea’s fortunes

Earlier this week, Chelsea unveilled Thomas Tuchel as their new manager following the sacking of Frank Lampard, the Club’s legend and all-time top goal-scorer. 18-months. That is the time Frank Lampard lasted at Chelsea as a Manager. However, this is a familiar sight to those who have followed Chelsea during Roman Abramovich’s time as the Club’s owner — a Russian billionaire unsatisfied by nothing else but instant results. Following an impressive first season with the club despite the FIFA transfer ban, the second season was expected to be even better — more especially with the club backing him in the transfer market. A great start to a season, ruined by a bad spell for Lampard has brought Tuchel to Stamford Bridge. Tuchel, who led Paris St Germain to a treble last season and a Uefa Champions League final, will reunite with Thiago Silva and Christian Pulisic whom he coached at PSG and Borussia Dortmund respectively. Perhaps, the biggest reason behind Tuchel’s appointment is to...

Leicester City crowned Premier League champions

Leicester’s fantastic duo of Riyad Mahrez (L) and Jamie Vardy (R) Eden Hazard second-half strike against Tottenham hotspurs in a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge was enough to hand Leicester City their first ever premier league title with two matches to spare.  Leicester became the first team outside of the big four (Manchester United, Manchester city, Arsenal, and Chelsea) to win the premier league title since Blackburn Rovers in 1995. Leicester finished at position 14 out 20 during the season of (2014/2015). They averaged just 1.08 points per game in their 38 premier league matches. When the club sacked Nigel Pearson at the end of the 2014/2015 season most people were convinced the Foxes were heading in the relegation direction for the upcoming season  of  (2015/2016). The loss of former Internazionale (Inter Milan) midfielder, Esteban Cambiasso to Greek Champions Olympiakos put a stamp to people’s minds that the King Power team would be relegated t...

Mashaba's future as Bafana coach hanging in the line

Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba (Gerhard Duraan/BackpagePix)   Bafana Bafana coach, Shakes Mashaba look to be edging ever so close to the exit door at SAFA house after a string of unimpressive results during the 2017 AFCON qualifying games. Apart from Hlompho Kekana’s wonder goal against Cameroon, Mashaba’s team has been poor throughout the qualifying campaign having managed to collect three points out of a possible 12.The team currently sit at the third spot in group M and is left with two games to play. In the first game of the qualifiers Bafana Bafana played a goal-less draw to Gambia, a country which had been banned for a year by FIFA.   This was followed by a shocking 3-1 away defeat to ‘minnows’, Mauritania, a country which many of us first heard about few days prior to the Bafana Bafana game. From those two games it was clear that the team was heading in the wrong direction.   This was recently followed by poor squad selection for the two gam...
